Women's Bible Study

What does WBS stand for?

Well, it started out as Women’s Bible Study. But it also stands for What does the Bible Say?

Why do you get together?

We are an independent, non-denominational group of women who started meeting together in 2006. We are open to all women in our community. There is a lot that is different about us, but we all have one thing in common--we want to know what the Bible says. There is so much going on in the world, and we have a need to see what this ancient yet timeless book says. We look to it to inform our understanding of God, and give us insight into how we fit into his plan. We are growing in numbers and want to share this very good thing with you. We think that there are probably a lot of other women like us, and we want to get the word out. The perfect time to join us is just now.

What are you studying this year?

Check out our details page or weblog.

When and where do you meet?

Our regular season session goes from mid-September through early May. Our summer session starts mid-May through July. For both the summer and regular season sessions, we meet on Thursdays in the morning and again in the evening. Check out our details page of our weblog for more info. Both editions meet at the First Presbyterian Church in River Forest, IL, (see directions).

Does it cost anything?

We ask for $30 for the full regular season session, and $20 for the summer session, to cover expenses. There is also an additional fee for the childrens program, click here for details.

How does it work – what does a typical time together look like?

The topics we will study this year have been broken up into week-sized lessons. At the end of each weekly meeting, we get assigned the homework questions for the upcoming week. We go through the lesson that week at home and fill out the questions on our own as best we can. On Thursdays we meet together in small groups (the same group each week) and discuss our insights, our questions, our thoughts. After the small group time all the groups get together and hear from a woman who has done some deep study in the lesson and shares what she’s come up with. You never know who the woman may be. We always sing some songs of worship together too for the morning session. These songs will range from ageless hymns to music written recently. All the words are up on a screen so no one feels awkward or left out. That part usually lasts about ten or fifteen minutes.

Do you think I will fit in?

What we love about WBS is that we gather with a diverse group of women but we all want to know what the Bible says. We come from about 45 different local churches, and some of us come from no church at all. It's great. There are women there who have never opened a Bible before and there are women who have studied it every day of their adult lives. There are a lot of women at every level in between.

Do you think they really want me?

We want to make sure you know you are invited and you are welcome.

What if it's the middle of the season?

It doesn't matter, come anytime! We will provide you with all the season's lessons, or a book, so you can catch up if you'd like.

What if I have more questions?

Check out our weblog. Feel free to email us.

Think about it – you never know what you might find out.
